We relied mostly on furgons and found them an affordable and fun way to travel around Albania and meet locals and fellow tourists along the way. Just be prepared for flexible departure times – they often leave when full rather than on a fixed schedule!

Shkodër – Gateway to the Albanian Alps
We started our Albania travel adventure in Shkodër, one of the oldest cities in the Balkans. It’s a great budget base for exploring the Albanian Alps and a cool city to spend some time in.
- Rozafa Castle – Entry is just $2 and you get a fantastic insight into some ancient Albanian history with stunning views over the city to boot.
- Lake Shkodër – Rent a bike for $3 – $5 and explore the lakeside. We went to a local bike repair shop and in very bad broken Albania and some Italian we managed to secure bikes for the day and loved riding around the beautiful lake.
- Marubi – The National Museum of Photography is an excellent way to spend a morning or afternoon. For under $7, it’s well worth the entry fee.
Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows
A UNESCO-listed town, Berat is a must-visit on any Albania travel itinerary. The historic Ottoman houses, Berat Castle, and cheap local restaurants make it a great stop.
- Berat Castle – Entry is free and you’ll get to experience an entire ancient village within castle walls.
- Local food – Delicious traditional meals for $5 – $10, are widely available with plenty of hearty options on offer.
- Walk Along the Osum River – Stroll along the riverbanks for beautiful views of Berat’s historic houses and take in the clear waters and relaxed atmosphere.
Gjirokastër – A Historic Gem
Another UNESCO-protected destination in Albania, Gjirokastër is famous for its stone-roofed houses and Ottoman architecture. Budget travelers will love the free walking tours and cheap guesthouses.
- Gjirokastër Castle – Another Albanian city another epic castle. Entry to this one costs around $5 and it is worth every cent for the slice of history and the incredible mountain views.
- Ethnographic Museum – A 4-storey museum packed with local culture, historic charm, and interesting exhibitions. The entry fee is around $6.
- Climb to Ali Pasha Bridge – Take a short hike to this stunning Ottoman-era bridge, which offers stunning scenic views of the surrounding hills and is a fantastic example of historic architecture and engineering.

- Beach loungers – As little as $5 per day often with waiter service as you spend the day relaxing.
- Fresh seafood – Delicious meals for under $10 at local tavernas.
- Hike to the Monastery of St. George – Bored sitting on a sunbed? Take a short hike that rewards you with breathtaking coastal views and a peaceful historic monastery.

- Entrance fee – Around $10, a bargain! It’s one of the great budget-friendly activities in Albania.

Albanian food is delicious and cheap. You will see a lot of the same foods cropping up in traditional restaurants and my advice is to be adventurous and try them all. But here are some of the must-try budget dishes I found.
- Byrek – A flaky pastry with cheese, spinach, or meat ($0.50 – $1).
- Tavë Kosi – Baked lamb and yogurt dish ($3 – $5).
- Fërgesë – Slow-cooked pepper and cheese dish ($3 – $5).
Stick to local bakeries, family-run restaurants, and street food stalls to keep costs low. But, splashing out on a luxurious meal in the capital Tirana will only set you back around $25pp.
