Canada is a dream destination for many, but how expensive is Canada for travelers and those considering a longer stay? While it’s known for breathtaking landscapes, friendly locals, and vibrant cities, the cost of living and travel can vary significantly depending on where you go.
Hannah and I left the UK in 2022 and although our goal was simply to explore the world, we always have an eye on possible destinations to call home again one day. Being British and part of the Commonwealth, Canada is a great option for us, especially as it provides easy access for trips to the USA.
So, with that in mind I’ve completed a full breakdown of the costs of living and what vacationing in Canada will cost you. Whether you’re visiting for a short trip or thinking about moving, understanding expenses in Canada can help you budget wisely. (note – all prices are in USD)
The Cost of Travel in Canada

Canada is a vast country, and travel expenses depend on how you get around and where you stay. Flights between major cities can be costly, and long-distance train travel isn’t always budget-friendly. However, buses and budget airlines offer more affordable options. Use Skyscanner to find affordable flights.
Accommodation varies widely, with everything from high-end luxury hotels and boutique stays to hostels and budget hotels available in most cities. Prices tend to be higher in places like Vancouver and Toronto and more affordable in Winnipeg and Calgary.
The weather plays a big part in the rise and fall of travel costs in Canada. Parts of the country experience extreme winters making even short-haul distances a complicated undertaking. However, this generally drives down the costs as demand reduces, so if you are happy to brave the cold, you’ll certainly save money.
Food and Dining Costs

Eating out in Canada can be pricey, especially in major cities. I’ve scanned 3 of the big destinations and come up with some averages, I’ll break down a few of the cities later in this article. A sit-down meal at a mid-range restaurant costs around $20 – $30 per person, while fast food as always is slightly cheaper.
Groceries are a more affordable option, and cooking at home can significantly cut costs. If you’re in Canada long-term, shopping at discount grocery stores like No Frills or Walmart can help you save. Prices are compariable to most major US and UK cities.
A night out, drinking on the town, in most Canadian cities will cost you the same as it would in most places, and is by no means expensive compared to London or New York. But be aware that much like the US, Canada has a tipping culture in most drinking and dining establishments, which can add 10% – 20%.
Is It Expensive to Live in Canada?

Living in Canada comes with high costs, especially in urban centers. Rent in Vancouver and Toronto is among the highest in North America, with one-bedroom apartments averaging $2,000 per month. Smaller cities like Halifax and Winnipeg offer more affordable living and are attractive options for those on a budget.
Utilities, internet, and mobile phone plans also add to the cost of living. Using a more expensive city like Vancouver as a guide, expect to pay $150 – $200 per month for basic utilities including a cell mobile plan.
Is Canada More Expensive Than the US?

In many ways, Canada is on par with or slightly more expensive than the US. Groceries, dining out, and electronics tend to be pricier due to taxes and import fees. However, healthcare costs are significantly lower for residents due to Canada’s public healthcare system.
Housing prices fluctuate, with some US cities being more affordable than Canadian counterparts, especially outside major metropolitan areas. Click here to add a Canadian city and compare it with any other city in the world to see the difference in prices for yourself.
Canadian Cities: Expensive, Mid-Range, and Affordable
Canada’s cost of living varies widely depending on the city, with some places ranking among the most expensive in the world while others remain relatively affordable. To give you a better idea of what to expect, here’s a look at one of the priciest cities, a mid-range option, and a more budget-friendly choice.
Vancouver – One of the Most Expensive Cities in Canada

Vancouver consistently ranks as one of the priciest cities in Canada. With one-bedroom city center apartments averaging around $2000 per month, high grocery costs, and expensive dining options, it can be tough on the wallet.
However, its stunning nature, mild climate, and high quality of life keep it in demand. For budget-conscious travelers or digital nomads, house sitting or shared accommodations can help reduce expenses. Click here to learn all about house sitting in Canada.
Calgary – A Mid-Range Option

Calgary offers a balance between affordability and a great lifestyle. Rent prices are lower than in Vancouver or Toronto, with one-bedroom apartments averaging $1,100 – $1,400 per month. The cost of groceries, dining, and transportation is also more reasonable.
Plus, Alberta has no provincial sales tax, making shopping and services slightly cheaper than in other provinces.
Winnipeg – A More Affordable Choice

For those looking for a budget-friendly city, Winnipeg is one of Canada’s most affordable major urban centers. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment averages around $1000 per month, and the overall cost of living is significantly lower than in bigger cities.
While winters can be harsh, Winnipeg offers plenty of free outdoor activities, a growing food scene, and a strong community vibe.

Living in Canada on a Budget

For those planning to stay longer, Canada offers several ways to live affordably. Shared accommodations, discount grocery stores, and second-hand shopping can help reduce expenses. Many cities have thriving gig economies, allowing travelers to work part-time and offset costs.
House sitting is another excellent option, providing free housing in exchange for pet care. Long term stays are often listed among the thousands of active homeowners globally accepting applications for house sitters.
Hannah and I usually only apply for stays over 1 month and our longest sit to date was 3-months in Durham, NC. Click here to read How to Become a Successful House Sitter.
Do UK Citizens Need a Visa for Canada?

UK and US citizens can visit Canada for up to six months without a visa but must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before arrival. This online application costs $5 and is valid for five years. Those looking to work or study will need to apply for the appropriate visa.
