In this guide, I’ll share my top 10 amazing activities in Budapest, blending iconic landmarks with some of the city’s best, hidden gems. Whether you’re looking for free things to do in Budapest or planning to indulge in some top experiences, this list has something for everyone.
Hungary’s stunning capital is bursting with history, culture, and unique charm. During a two-month Workaway exchange in the city Hannah and I spent countless weekends discovering the best of Budapest. From breathtaking architecture to exciting nightlife, this city never ceases to amaze us, let’s dive in!
Explore Buda Castle
Buda Castle is a must-see and a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched atop Castle Hill. The castle grounds offer hours of free things to do in Budapest, like wandering its courtyards and admiring panoramic views of the Danube River and Pest.
You can ride the iconic funicular to the top of the hill and visit the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum for a deeper dive into the city’s past.
During 3 separate visits from friends and family during our time in Budapest, Hannah and I experienced the castle many times. My top tip is to visit in the evening and enjoy the stunning lights of the Parliament Building and Pest at night.
Relax at Széchenyi Thermal Bath
Budapest is famous for its thermal baths, and Széchenyi is one of the most famous. With its grand architecture and numerous indoor and outdoor pools, it’s one of the top attractions in Budapest. Whether you want to relax or join a game of chess in the water, it’s an experience not to miss.
We visited on a chilly February morning after a heavy night out on Hannah’s birthday, and the contrast between the warm waters and cold air was a definite hangover cure! Don’t forget to book your tickets in advance, as it can get busy. Click here for more information.
Stroll Along Andrássy Avenue
This grand boulevard is another of Budapest’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a hub of sightseeing in Budapest. Lined with stunning Neo-Renaissance mansions, shops, and cafes, it leads to Heroes’ Square and City Park.
Walking down Andrássy Avenue feels like stepping into a different era of elegance. You can stop at any number of bars, cafes, and restaurants as you walk, or cut off down side streets to explore off-the-beaten-track parts of the city.
Visit Fisherman’s Bastion
Fisherman’s Bastion is a fairytale-like structure offering some of the best views in Budapest. While parts of it are free to explore, a small fee gives you access to even more vantage points and if you’re only going to do it once, I’d say pay the $4!
This is one of our favorite amazing activities in Budapest, especially in the morning when it’s less crowded. We took all of our visitors here at least once, it’s an iconic spot for incredible photos.
Discover the Jewish Quarter and Szimpla Kert
The Jewish Quarter is home to unique ruin bars, trendy restaurants, and historic synagogues. The highlight is Szimpla Kert, widely regarded as the best ruin bar in Budapest.
We’ve spent many afternoons and evenings here. It was the site of Hannah’s previously mentioned birthday drinks that left us hungover in the thermal baths the next day! Each room has a different theme, making it an adventure in itself and another great photo location. Grab a drink and soak in the vibe.
Walk Across the Széchenyi Chain Bridge
Connecting Buda and Pest, this iconic Széchenyi Bridge is perfect for sightseeing in Budapest. The pedestrian walkway offers incredible views of both sides of the city. On the Pest side, you can then easily walk along the Danube up to the Parliament Building and explore the epic piazza that surrounds it
We’ve done this multiple times during our visits, especially at night when the bridge and Parliament Building are beautifully lit. It’s one of the free things to do in Budapest that I recommend to everyone as it leaves a lasting impression.
Explore St. Stephen’s Basilica
St. Stephen’s Basilica is one of Budapest’s most striking landmarks. The interior is equally magnificent, and the dome offers panoramic views of the city.
Climbing to the top was one of the best activities in Budapest for us. The effort was well worth the breathtaking views over the Danube and surrounding rooftops. There is an elevator if you feel less inclined to climb the stairs.
Our friends got to see a unique side of St. Stephen’s Basilica with a private guided tour that also included various other stops around the city. They said it was fantastic, so click here to check it out.
Take a Danube River Cruise
Seeing Budapest from the water offers a unique perspective. Many cruises are available, ranging from budget-friendly options to luxury experiences. Tours can be booked online, at official kiosks in the city, or even sometimes at the boats themselves.
We’ve done several cruises, both during the day and at night. I’d highly recommend opting for an evening cruise as you get to experience the illuminated Parliament Building in all its glory. It’s a must for anyone looking for the top attractions in Budapest.
Visit Heroes’ Square and City Park
Heroes’ Square is an iconic landmark featuring statues of Hungary’s historical figures. Behind it lies City Park, a sprawling green space with attractions like Vajdahunyad Castle.
Both are great places to enjoy some tranquility in a busy city and snap photos of the picturesque castle. It’s another one of those amazing activities in Budapest that combines history with leisure.
Wander Through the Central Market Hall
For a taste of authentic Hungarian cuisine, head to the Central Market Hall. From paprika to lángos, it’s a food lover’s paradise. I’ve always loved browsing the stalls and shopping like a local. The lively atmosphere, noisy ambiance, and traditional vibe make it one of the best free activities in Budapest.
Don’t be afraid to ask for free samples, especially if you intend to buy something. We went here with our Workaway hosts, one a native of the city who had no problem demanding to try everything before committing to buying. We all got to enjoy lots of free food!
