In this guide, I’ll share the best places to visit in Albania, drawing from my adventures hopping around the country. Whether you’re seeking cultural immersion, natural beauty, or a budget-friendly escape, Albania has it all.
Albania was a country not even on our radar until two former Workaway hosts in Montenegro strongly recommended we pay it a visit. From its stunning coastlines to amazing historic cities, this fascinating country offers something for everyone. It is home to 4 Unesco World Heritage Sites!
Tirana: The Vibrant Capital City with a Rich History
Tirana is the beating heart of Albania, where tradition and modernity collide. Start your journey in Skanderbeg Square, the city’s cultural hub, and explore landmarks like the National History Museum and Et’hem Bey Mosque.
Don’t miss Bunk’Art, an underground museum that tells the story of Albania’s communist past. For food lovers, the city offers an array of traditional dishes like byrek and tavë kosi. Tirana’s nightlife makes it one of the best places to visit in Albania for city explorers, partygoers, and night owls.
Berat: The City of a Thousand Windows
Known for its stunning Ottoman architecture, Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit if, like me, you are a fan of history. Stroll through the cobbled streets of Mangalem and Gorica, two historic neighborhoods separated by the Osum River.
If you have limited time in Berat, just be sure to climb to Berat Castle for the breathtaking views and a glimpse into the city’s past. Berat perfectly blends cultural heritage with natural beauty, it should be high up on the list of cities to visit in Albania.
Gjirokastër: A Step Back in Time
Another UNESCO site, Gjirokastër, is famed for its stone houses and medieval fortress. Often called the “Stone City,” it’s a place where time seems to stand still. Explore the bazaar, filled with artisan crafts, and visit the Ethnographic Museum for insights into traditional Albanian life.
Gjirokastër is ideal for travelers seeking history and authenticity. It dates back almost 700 years and is overlooked by the imposing Castle of Gjirokastër. The Castle hosts what is considered one of the most important events in Albanian culture, the Gjirokastër National Folk Festival every 5 years.
The Albanian Riviera: Beaches and Crystal-Clear Waters
Stretching along the Ionian Sea, the Albanian Riviera is a paradise for sun-seekers. Ksamil, with its turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, rivals the Caribbean while costing a fraction of the price.
Nearby, Himarë and Dhermi offer quieter escapes with stunning coastal views. The Riviera is not just about beaches; it’s also home to Llogara Pass, an unforgettable iconic scenic mountain drive perfect for adventurers. It’s worth hiring a car for the day just to do this drive!
Shkodër: Gateway to the Accursed Mountains
If you love the outdoors, Shkodër is one of the best places to visit in Albania. As the gateway to the Albanian Alps, it’s the starting point for the famous Valbona to Theth hike. The city itself boasts cultural landmarks like Rozafa Castle and Lake Shkodër, a beautiful spot for kayaking, hiking, or picnicking.
Our Workaway placement in Montenegro was on the opposite side of the expansive lake and Shkodër was our entry point into Albania. It is easy to take an affordable and comfortable bus from Podgorica, head through passport control en route, and arrive in Albania a few hours later.
Lake Ohrid and Pogradec: Tranquility Meets Nature
Shared with North Macedonia, Lake Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its clear waters and biodiversity. The town of Pogradec is perfect for a relaxing retreat with plenty of lakeside cafes and scenic walks.
This destination is ideal for travelers looking to unwind in nature. It’s fairly straightforward to continue your journey from here into North Macedonia and explore a different culture altogether! However, I’ll save that for another article.

Is Albania Safe to Visit?
Albania is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. The crime rate is low, especially in tourist areas like Tirana and the Riviera. Locals are incredibly welcoming, often going out of their way to assist visitors. As with any destination, staying aware of your surroundings is key.
Solo travelers, including women, often report positive experiences exploring Albania. Public transport and taxis are generally reliable and secure.
