Why House Sitting Reviews Are So Important

A real review from our profile, and a great example of how to do it.

In a system where strangers exchange home and pet care for free accommodation, trust is the glue. House sitting reviews are what build that trust. They give a real glimpse into what someone or somewhere was like.

For sitters, good reviews create a track record of reliability, kindness, and capability. For hosts, they show how communicative and respectful you are, plus offer a first-hand review of your pets, home, and neighborhood.

Platforms like Trusted Housesitters rely heavily on review systems to help users make informed decisions. The more thoughtful and specific the reviews, the more they help others.

Getting Started Without Any Reviews

Once you sign up for Trusted Housesitters, your profile will, of course, be a blank slate. But don’t worry, the platform allows you to add character references from friends, colleagues, neighbors, or anybody who can vouch for you as a reliable and trustworthy person.

Utilize this function and ask anyone you think appropriate to write you a short review. House sitters should try applying for listings that have low applications, perhaps close to home. This enables an easy opportunity to showcase house sitting skills in practice and receive easy, verified reviews.

How to Write a Helpful House Sitting Review

A great review doesn’t need to be long, but it should be honest, clear, and kind. Here are a few tips for both homeowners and sitters:

For sitters:

  • Share your overall experience
  • Describe the pets’ personalities and routines
  • Mention the home’s condition and communication with the owner
  • Highlight anything unique or unexpected (in a good way)
  • State whether you’d be likely to return
  • Talk about the neighborhood,

For homeowners:

  • Talk about how your pets responded to the sitter
  • Mention cleanliness, communication, and reliability
  • Note whether you’d invite them back

Being specific helps more than you think. “Left the home clean and tidy” is much more useful than “they were great!”

How to Receive and Learn from Reviews

Getting feedback can feel daunting, especially if it includes constructive criticism. But even a review that isn’t glowing can help you improve.

If you receive a review that feels unfair or unclear, it’s okay to politely follow up for clarification. Most people will appreciate your willingness to learn and grow. The feedback facility on THS is such that you can respond directly to the feedback you received in full view of future hosts/sitters.

Responding professionally to reviews shows future hosts or sitters that you’re thoughtful and responsible. If you believe a review to be unwarranted, contact customer service.

More Details on the THS Review System

As Trusted Housesitters has grown, so have some of the main functions of the site. The review system is one such area that has changed since we have been using it. Now, sitters and hosts only have two weeks to exchange reviews, with the clock starting as soon as either party publishes their review.

This is a reasonable limit, however, we have found ourselves chasing a review on more than one occasion. You can request a review through the website. I then send a polite message asking them if everything was okay and highlighting the importance of reviews to our future house sitting plans.

If both parties don’t write reviews within the two-week window, then neither the host nor the sitter receives a review. Both just get a blank page, denoting that an exchange was completed. To me, this can signify a bad sit, so it’s something best avoided through polite communication once the first review is submitted.

The Impact of Reviews on Your Future

Good house sitting reviews open doors. A positive trail of feedback builds your reputation and helps you stand out.

It also increases your chances of being selected for competitive sits or being invited back. We’ve been offered return sits and long-term opportunities purely based on our reviews. On platforms like Trusted Housesitters, reviews often matter more than anything else when a homeowner is deciding who to invite.

Both parties are also given a 5-star rating system to use for issues such as organization, cleanliness, accuracy, reliability, self-sufficiency, tidiness, and happiness of pets. This is a great place to note any small issues that didn’t impact the sit in any major way.

Encouraging Reviews the Right Way

Always request a review through the app first.

While you shouldn’t pressure anyone for a review, there’s nothing wrong with a gentle reminder. At the end of a sit, simply say something like, “If you have time to leave a quick review, it really helps us continue doing this kind of work.”

Some people need reminding that they only have two weeks, as this wasn’t always the case with THS. And don’t forget to leave one yourself. The review system only works when both parties participate.
