Unexpected Amazing Places: House Sitting in Phu Quoc

Frequent visitors to Asia may be fully aware of Vietnam’s beautiful islands, but for us first-timers, Phu Quoc was one of the unexpected amazing places we have discovered in the last few years.

Phu Quoc (Foo Kwock) is a stunning paradise that feels a world away from Vietnam’s chaotic cities. After a month in Hanoi, we were ready for some tranquility by the sea and Phu Quoc did not disappoint.

I’m looking forward to telling you all about another of our unexpected amazing places, let’s get started!

How We Ended Up in Phu Quoc

A cool sign we saw on the beach in Phu Quoc.

Our initial Vietnamese plan didn’t include a trip to Phu Quoc, but when an amazing house sitting opportunity came online, we happily adjusted our schedule. We had initially applied for a house sit in Cambodia, and thought we had it (we nailed the interview!), but the homeowner ultimately went with someone else.

Slightly perturbed as we had waited weeks to be told we weren’t being given the sit, we were appeased when the Phu Quoc listing pinged on our Trusted Housesitters app. It was an apartment 2 minutes walk from the beach and in one of the island’s main hubs, so we applied immediately.

Thankfully, this time we were confirmed for the house sit, where we would be looking after a giant husky dog called Abraham and his two cat companions. Read all about our experience with the pets in my previous Short Tails episode – Abraham The Big Famous Dog of Phu Quoc.

Where is Phu Quoc?

Phu Quoc has amazing sunsets

Phu Quoc is an island off the southern coast of Vietnam, close to Cambodia. It’s Vietnam’s largest island, known for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. Easily accessible by plane or ferry, it’s a tropical delight not to be missed.

Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is a beach lover’s dream. The island has some of the most pristine coastline I have ever seen, with white sand, palm trees, and clear blue waters. It’s perfect for sunbathing, snorkeling, scuba diving, or simply relaxing by the sea.

Besides its natural beauty, Phu Quoc has a rich cultural side. You can visit busy night markets, explore fishing villages, or hike in the national parks. Whether you’re an adventurer or a beach bum, Phu Quoc has something for everyone!

Our house sitting experience was excellent and we enjoyed being so close to the beach and all of Phu Quoc’s main attractions. We took Abraham walking on the beach every day and despite his massive size, we made living in a fairly small apartment with 3 animals work.

As it’s always hot in Phu Quoc, Abraham liked to walk before the sun was up, chill all day in the A/C, and then head out for another walk in the evening. The cats took care of themselves and came and went as they pleased, usually only coming to us for their food!

Sonasea – the area in which we were house sitting – is home to a couple of the island’s largest resorts. These mega complexes are also open to the public and for a small daily fee ($6) we were able to use the pool, private beach, business center, and gym every day – more about this later.

Everything You Need to Know about Phu Quoc

Beach sunset in Phu Quoc

We arrived in Phu Quoc a bit green, but after three weeks, we really got to know it. Here’s everything you need to know, plus the top must-see spots for your visit, and what makes it one of our top unexpected amazing places.

Safety and Security in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

pickpocket

Phu Quoc is generally a safe destination for travelers, with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Petty theft, like pickpocketing, can happen but is rare, especially in tourist areas. It’s always wise to stay aware of your surroundings and secure your belongings.

For transportation, taxis and ride-sharing apps like Grab are reliable and safe to use. Renting motorbikes is popular, but roads can be challenging, so drive cautiously. Helmets are required, and sticking to main roads is recommended for safety.

Healthcare services on the island are decent, with pharmacies and clinics available. For emergencies, there’s a local hospital, though more serious issues may require travel to the mainland. As with any trip, travel insurance is a good idea for peace of mind.

Weather in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Phu Quoc enjoys a tropical climate, making it warm and sunny year-round. The dry season, from November to April, brings the best beach weather with minimal rain. Expect clear skies, calm seas, and ideal conditions for outdoor activities.

The rainy season runs from May to October, with frequent afternoon showers. While rain can be heavy, it rarely lasts all day, leaving plenty of time to explore. The island’s greenery thrives during this season, adding to its natural beauty.

Temperatures in Phu Quoc average between 25-30°C, so pack light and breathable clothing. Don’t forget sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Whether dry or wet, Phu Quoc is an idyllic destination.

Cost of Living in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Overall, Vietnam is a very affordable place, making it great for budget travelers and luxury seekers alike. You can find delicious street food for just a few dollars or dine at upscale beachfront restaurants for a bit more. Accommodation options range from budget hostels to high-end resorts, catering to all price points.

Transportation costs are low, with taxis and motorbike rentals being the most common ways to get around. A motorbike rental typically costs around $7-10 per day. We used Grab a lot during our time in Vietnam, and it seemingly always costs around $1 for short trips.

Daily expenses like groceries and activities are reasonably priced, especially compared to the USA and the UK. Local markets offer fresh produce and seafood at great prices, perfect for house sitting or self-catering. Whether you’re on a shoestring budget or looking for luxury, Phu Quoc has plenty of options.
